"Empowering Young Minds: MVGFCI's 'Alalay sa Literasiya: Pagbasa Project Leads the Way in Community Literacy Development"

On August 9, 2024, the Office of the Community Extension and Outreach Program (CEOP) at MVGFCI made a pivotal move in tackling literacy challenges by organizing a General Parents Orientation for the “Alalay sa Literasiya: Pagbasa Project” at Imelda Integrated School. Seventy-two parents of young pupils grappling with reading difficulties attended, demonstrating their commitment to supporting their children's journey toward improved literacy.

The “Alalay sa Literasiya” program, where MVGFC students mentor primary school pupils in reading both Filipino and English, serves as a cornerstone of MVGFCI's mission. This initiative goes beyond traditional tutoring, offering personalized, focused instruction designed to set these young learners on a path to a brighter educational future. By leveraging its resources and expertise within the community, MVGFCI reaffirms its unwavering commitment to service and social development.

For MVGFC students, the program offers more than just teaching experience. It is an essential part of their holistic development, cultivating leadership, responsibility, and a profound sense of social commitment. This initiative embodies MVGFCI’s mission to mold graduates into competent, morally upright professionals who are deeply committed to societal progress. Through this hands-on experience, students refine their communication, leadership, and teaching skills while embracing the core values of empathy, compassion, and community service.

The program’s impact extends far beyond the classroom, contributing to the larger goal of societal development. By improving literacy among primary students, the initiative perfectly aligns with the founder’s vision of achieving a better life through education.

The program’s objectives are both ambitious and impactful:

1. Improved Reading Proficiency- Enhance the reading skills of primary students in grades 1 to 3 in both Filipino and English by at least 20% within a 5-month period, as measured by reading assessment scores.

2. Development of Teaching Skills Among MVGFC Students- Equip MVGFC student tutors with effective teaching and mentoring abilities, with measurable improvements reflected in evaluations conducted before and after the 5-month program.

3. Increased Engagement and Interest in Reading Among Primary Students- Foster a love for reading and encourage active participation, with each student expected to read at least 10 books and engage in reading activities over six months.

4. Enhanced Community Connection and Social Responsibility-  Strengthen the bond between MVGFC and the local community, aiming for at least 80% positive feedback from parents, teachers, and community members by the end of the program.

The success of this initiative is further amplified by collaborations among various campus organizations, including ITE Volunteer Students, English Club, KamFil, MVGFC SAO Office, MVGFC Library, MVGFC Guidance Office, Office of Research and Development, Office of the Director for Instruction, and the Creatives team. Together, they form a dynamic force driving educational and social change.

Imelda Integrated School has expressed its deep commitment to strengthening its partnership with MVGFC. “Ito na ang simula ng ating tulong-tulong na kampanya para puksain ang kahinaan sa pagbasa,” stated Teacher Virginia Adriano during the program. CEOP Officer Maria Victoria Victa outlined the next steps: “Ang isusunod natin ay kabuhayan para lalong ganahan ang inyong mga anak sa pag-aaral.” CEOP Director Rene Boy Abiva concluded the program with a resonant message, “Kaisa niyo ang MVGFC sa inyong mga pangarap,” highlighting the institution's dedication to the dreams and aspirations of the community it serves.

This initiative is proudly led under the banner of the Institute of Teacher Education, reflecting its steadfast commitment to providing quality education to all Filipinos and particularly the Cabanatuenos. Through this effort, MVGFCI continues to live up to its mission of making a lasting impact on society through education. ###
